Rebuild After Flood & Fire

Format2 to 5 days · in person
CertificateCertificate of Practical Training
StatusReady to book

The water's out, the walls are open, and the restoration crew has signed it off as dry. Now somebody has to put the house back. Two days in person, tools in every hand: drywall, flooring, doors, trim, and the laundry room, because that's usually where it started.

This is the version I bring to your site, for groups up to 20. Sending a few new hires instead? The Flood Rebuild Bootcamp runs in my purpose-built training room in Hammond, 4 to 6 at a time.

What this isn't: mould or water remediation. That's a certified restoration company's job, and I'll tell you that straight. This course starts the day they hand you the house.

Done right, a rebuild is the chance to make the house better than it was: the right insulation, sealed air, checking the ductwork was cleaned before you close up, and finishes that survive the next one.

After a fire: once the restoration company has cleaned, deodorized and signed off, the rebuild is the same work: drywall, flooring, doors, trim. I don't teach smoke, soot or odour remediation.

What we cover

  • Day 1: the handoff. Reading the dry-out sign-off and moisture readings before you close anything up
  • Day 1: safety on a damaged house, and building it back to survive the next one: basement insulation and air sealing choices
  • Day 1 station: hanging, taping and mudding drywall
  • Day 2 station: flooring. Checking the slab or subfloor first, what survives water, click vinyl install
  • Day 2 station: doors. Hanging a pre-hung door and the hardware
  • Day 2 station: trim. Base and case, tight joints
  • Day 2 station: the laundry room. Shut-offs, drain, pan, dryer vent, leak sensors

Run it 2 to 5 days

Two days is the core course. Add days and each stage gets more time on the tools, and with 4 or 5 days the group rebuilds a full room, from dry studs to trim, as a crew. The days don't have to be back to back. Prices are a starting point: tell me your group, your site and your funding, and we'll build to it.

Learning outcomes

By the end, participants can:

  1. Read a dry-out sign-off and moisture readings before closing a wall
  2. Hang, tape and mud drywall
  3. Check a subfloor and install click vinyl flooring
  4. Hang a pre-hung door and install base and case trim
  5. Set up a laundry room to survive the next leak: shut-offs, drain pan, dryer vent, leak sensors

How it's checked: The instructor checks off each person at every station: done safely, done to spec. Pass the check-off, get the certificate.

Why me

Almost 30 years putting houses together, and 15 to 20 insurance rebuilds putting them back together. Markel Home Improvements was flooring, stairs, trim and doors, and I hold the Ontario Certificate of Qualification as a Floor Covering Installer. AIM Thermal was insulation. I'm HRAI certified in Indoor Air Quality, so I know what has to be right with the air and the ductwork before you close a house back up.

Also comes as

Any piece on its own: the drywall, flooring, door, trim or laundry room modules, in person or live from my studio.
